Why Most Enterprise AI Proofs of Concept Never Make It to Production
I’ve seen it happen at least thirty times now. Some vendor shows up with a flashy demo, the C-suite gets excited, IT gets tasked with running a proof of concept, and six months later the whole thing quietly dies. The POC technically worked, everyone agrees it was “promising,” and then it sits on a shelf forever while the organization moves on to the next shiny object.

The Fundamental Problem with Most POCs

Demand clear success criteria that include not just model accuracy but operational metrics like cost per transaction, time to production, and ongoing maintenance requirements.
Yes, this makes POCs harder. Yes, it might mean some projects die earlier. That’s actually a good thing. Better to kill a bad idea after three months than to string along a doomed project for two years before finally admitting it’s not going to work.
The organizations getting value from AI aren’t the ones running the most POCs. They’re the ones ruthlessly focused on getting things into production, learning from real-world usage, and iterating quickly. That mindset shift—from proving the technology works to proving you can operate it—is what separates successful AI adoption from expensive science experiments.
